Though there are many beaches along the Oregon coast that we think everyone should visit, we must admit that Florence-area beaches are superb, and our favorite. Once you visit them, they’ll be your favorite too. To see where the dunes came from, just look inland: they’re essentially ground-up pieces of the Oregon Coast Range, worn away by time and weather and washed downstream to the ocean. Tides, currents, waves and wind pushed the resulting sand back inland. Since this part of Oregon’s coastline is a gentle slope instead of the usual steep headlands, the sand spread inland as far as . Dunes are large masses of wind-blown sand, and are most common in deserted environments, such as the Sahara, and also near area with dunes is called a dune system. In physical geography, a dune is a hill of loose sand built by aeolian processes (wind) or the flow of water. Dunes occur in different shapes and sizes, formed by interaction with the flow of air or water.
The Oregon coast hides many secrets. Walk along historic stagecoach wheel ruts at Hug Point State Recreation Site, or watch surfers at Indian Beach. The bit of dunes you see across the river stretches into the expansive Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. Enjoy an afternoon of sand boarding or a thrilling ride in a dune buggy, or lounge in the beach chairs provided at the house for a relaxing day on one of the Coast's most beautiful beaches.
